Built after an 1887 fire, 225 S. Minnesota Ave. originally served as the secure headquarters for the First National Bank of St. Peter, anchored by a massive, heavy iron financial vault. As the decades rolled on, the building traded finance for food, transitioning into the popular Gannon’s Restaurant during the mid-20th century. By the late 1970s, it became Bank on the Avenue, a restaurant that cleverly used the historic vault as a major part of its charm. It later transformed into Godfather’s Pizza, a legendary local hangout where guests famously ate pizza inside that very same vault. Today, the building is meticulously preserved as KAVO Italian Eatery—a nod to caveau, meaning vault—and the upscale, boutique First National Hotel upstairs.
